"Transferring Files" instructions should provide a useful destination

The "Transferring Files" section (https://remarkable.guide/guide/access/file-transfer.html) has you transfer files into /home/root/. Which, apart from log.txt, is completely empty.
None of the documents, PDFs, etc. that are on the device are in this directory.

The guide should provide some note or link to instruct those of us who are trying to transfer documents via USB when the app syncing is failing.
i.e. when we scp our PDF to /home/root/, how do we get it to a place where the device GUI will let us view it?

The folder is not empty, it just contains hidden directories that contain your documents and settings files: https://remarkable.guide/guide/access/backup.html#backing-up-your-documents

Via ssh use ls -a to see all hidden directories and files, and over sftp, it would depend on what client you are using.

There is a stub for the filesystem that anybody can open PR to populate, as well as the file format, as you cannot just transfer a file over ssh and have it show up in xochitl. Which is covered in the first paragraph of the transferring files article.

I already tried that first; when I enable the USB web interface and direct my browser to the directed address (http://10.11.99.1/), it is unreachable, as are endpoints like http://10.11.99.1/documents/. That's I why I'm trying ssh instead.

(I just updated the device this morning, so maybe the update introduced changes to the USB web interface.)

Thanks for the links elsewhere. The fact that the topic is covered in completely different parts of the Guide than the "Transferring Files" page could be serviced by adding a sentence and a redirect to those other documentation pages you mentioned.

Sadly, neither of those other pages is loading for me right now. We are without power and I only get a slight trickle of data from my cell phone connection, which is why I'm trying to connect directly via USB.

I would still love to know where to scp the files so I can read them!

Found this Reddit post indicating that Mac users can't use Chrome-based browsers to access the USB web server. Switching to Safari browser, I am able to the web server and got the file transferred. 🥳

The two stub pages are meant for developers, so I would not want to be directing average users to them. As for the USB web interface, perhaps. For the backing up page, it's the next page in the guide, so it doesn't particularly make sense to add an explicit link.

This is interesting and likely should be added to the USB web server article. Especially if someone can figure out why Chrome base browsers are refusing to open the site. I do not have an intel or arm mac (68k and ppc only), so I cannot investigate.

I haven't seen this issue. I believe I've used the USB web interface from Chrome on my M1 MacBook for every version between 3.20 and 3.24. I just tested this with the following:

Tablet: reMarkable 2
rM OS: 3.24.0.149
Mac: MacBookPro18,3 (2021, M1 Pro)
macOS: 15.7.1
Chrome: 143.0.7499.193
