Design doc for the big station hazard I have been thinking about for Crescent (or indeed any new map). I think it is a cool gameplay vector and I would like to see maps play more a role in the story of the round.

"Necroflora" as in "Death Flower" not as in "undead"

Generally I think this is good i just have a few mild comments:

  • The theming of necroflora would benefit from being more unified and dialed in. The general though was that it'd be better as like mushrooms and mycelium.
  • The floral organs are cool but i think the aspect of them being conversions of environmental objects is overly limiting. I think they could be split between being random types of threats that just spawn and being event-based things that show up.
  • Instead of floral events being a bespoke thing they should likely just be normal station events that target/involve necroflora in some novel way. Something like the floral haze could just be a mass pollination event or smth.

Theme wise I have some backstory for it in mind and but I'm not attached to it being floral. I felt the flowering tree thing was more cohesive to the visual idea of growing over and transforming other things to create large structures and distinct from filth. But there's not really a mechanical difference between fungus and flowering tree and I think they could both be worked to have the same visual readability and flare art wise so its just down to preferences.

I felt it was the best way to balance things to have the Necroflora convert objects rather than randomly spawning so that rooms don't typically end up unbeatable or overstuffed, as well as being flavourful of growing over things and adapting them into its ecology in unique ways. Since rooms only have two vents typically for instance, you'd only get two projectile spitting flowers. Seedspewers are powerful, but the low number of vendors on the map means they're not common. Crew also gets a chance to react to growths rather than it being instant or too unpredictable to manage, and clearing a room keeps it cleared rather than allowing things to regrow and respawn.
With that said there's nothing that means it has to be done that way as long as there's some method in place to make sure the spawning is fair, balanced and fun, just need an idea of what that system would be in order to go with that instead.

The station events could definitely be generic, plus if down the line later there's a desire for stagehands to interact with the Necroflora to be more dangerous then that could be implemented some other way (like through possession) instead.

Rethemed to a fungus, and I gave it a reason to live on and eat ships.
Altered the spawning of the organs, rethemed them to specific mushroom types and removed the vine one.
Events can occur regardless of Ferrofungus presence

Okay, after thinking it through for a bit I had a breakthrough for how exactly to make the theming pop a bit more and I finally updated it.

Also this made me just ponder if we had some kind of ferrofungus-adjacent role called the mycologist.

hopefully, since I can't easily build it to check myself...
